munsch_surrounded-300Welcome to the Robert Munsch Author Study.  During this author study, you will use your Research Brochure to help you learn all about the author, Robert Munsch.

 

Asking Questions:

When you research, you should always begin by developing questions.  What kind of questions do you have about Robert Munsch?

  • Where was he born?
  • What inspires him?
  • Why did he decide to be an author?
  • Where does he get his ideas?

In your research brochure write down 3 questions you would like to answer about the author.  As you go through the 4 stations always be on the look out for the answers to your questions.

Station 1: Interview

  1. Look through the questions from the Interview with Robert Munsch.
    • The questions are bolded, and his answers are below each question.
    • You can also use the printed version.
  2. Write down 2 things you discovered about Robert Munsch on the Interview part of the brochure.
  3. Look for questions that could help you answer your questions.
  4. Answer your questions if you can.  It is okay if you do not find the answers.

Station 2: Watch a Movie

Many of Robert Munsch’s books have been turned into short cartoons.

  1. Watch the movie Murmel, Murmel, Murmel.
  2. Read the book version of Murmel, Murmel, Murmel.
  3. How does the book compare to the movie?
    • How is it the same?
    • How is it different?
  4. Discuss this at your table.

Station 3: Biography Hunt

  1. Use the Table of Contents to find each section.
  2. Answer the questions on your paper.
  3. Make sure to pay attention to text features (Captions, Headings, Subheadings)
  • Milestones: What year was LOVE YOU FOREVER named the best-selling children’s book of all time? (Not the same as the year it was published)
  • Growing Up: What was Robert Munsch’s first career after high school?
  • Learning the Craft: Robert Munsch is often INSPIRED TO WRITE about the children he is around.  What does he believe people should do if they want to be writers? (Pay attention to text features!)

Station 4: Get to Know Robert Munsch

  1. Read through the questions you need to watch and listen for during the video.
    • Where did Robert Munsch start telling his stories? (This is in the first 14 seconds of the video!)
    • What did he struggle with in school?
    • Where does he get his ideas?
    • Which one of his books is his favorite?
  2. Answer the questions as you watch the video about Robert Munsch.
    • Hint: the video will show you most of the questions right before he answers them.
